Austgen Murder Suspect Appears In Court
A 57-year-old Alsip, Illinois man accused of murder was back in court Friday in Crown Point.
The Lakeshore’s Sarah Holst reports that about a dozen friends and family members of Mary Austgen attended the brief court hearing for Ralph Martinez. Austgen was found shot to death inside her SUV parked outside Majestic Star Casino in March.
Following his arrest last week… Martinez was ordered by Lake Superior Court Judge Diane Boswell to hire an attorney. Martinez told the judge Friday morning that he’s been unable to obtain legal counsel because the calls he’s placed to family members for help have been blocked. Judge Boswell then appointed a public defender, for the sole purpose of helping Martinez hire a lawyer. She also set his next appearance for May 31st.
Austgen family members present in the courtroom chose not to comment on today’s proceedings.
