November 29, 2013 — The incoming commander of Camp Atterbury also led a Gary-based battalion in Iraq.  He’ll carry that experience into his new role when he takes command of the camp Sunday, December 1.

The Indiana National Guard officer named to command Camp Atterbury is Colonel Richard “Rick” Shatto.

He says the position is one he’s sought through his military career, which includes his command of the 113th Engineer Battalion in Gary during a 2004-2005 Iraq deployment.  Shatto recently served as Chief of Staff for the 38th Infantry Division in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Colonel Shatto is to take over leading the training base near Edinburgh in mid-December.  He’ll be taking over for Colonel Ivan Denton, who is being promoted to brigadier general and a national position in Washington.

53-year-old Shatto lives in Columbus, and he says he feels like he’s coming home since he started his military career at Camp Atterbury.

Shatto will be leading Camp Atterbury as it shifts from preparing thousands of soldiers for combat assignments each year into a training facility for new programs such as cyberdefense and drone testing.
