As Quinn Signs Bill, Opponents Prepare Legal Challenge
December 5, 2103 — A coalition of public employee unions opposed to Illinois’ newly-signed pension overhaul has directed its attorneys to prepare a court challenge.
The We Are One Illinois coalition issued a statement reiterating its intention to challenge the pension deal after Gov. Pat Quinn signed it into law today in Chicago. The legislation emerged after months of negotiation over ways to address Illinois’ $100 billion pension problem.
Lawmakers say the mood was somber when Quinn signed the measure into at a private event. Fewer than a dozen people attended the signing ceremony. Quinn says the overhaul will help Illinois deal with its dire financial situation, but public employee unions say they are already preparing to challenge the overhaul in court.
