INDIANAPOLIS – A federal appeals court announced Monday that a three-judge panel will hear oral arguments in Indiana’s marriage case at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 13.

The state is appealing a federal judge’s decision that struck down an Indiana law defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman. The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals has stayed the lower court ruling, which put that decision – and gay marriages – on hold pending its review.

The appeals court has also scheduled an expedited briefing process for the case.

“Hundreds of Hoosier couples are currently waiting to have their legal marriages recognized by the state, and they and their families are harmed by that uncertainty,” said Kyle Megrath, marriage coordinator for Hoosiers Unite for Marriage. “We look forward to sharing their stories in the coming weeks and making it clear that all loving, committed couples should be able to marry in Indiana.”

The attorney general’s office filed a motion Friday with the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals asking all 10 judges – rather than a panel of three – to hear the appeal.
