October 7, 2013 — Today is the beginning of a partnership between the Gary Animal Control Division and the Humane Society Calumet Area.

The director of the Human Society Calumet Area Rachel Delaney says the partnership is the right decision for the cats and dogs.

Humane Society Calumet Area, Executive Director, Rachel Delaney says, “We definitely will be able to help the animals with this partnership and we have partnered with rescued groups in the area and other facilities so that we really want what’s best for the animals and have they come into safe conditions.”

The partnership is sponsored by the Bissell Pet Foundation (BPF) after an assessment of the Gary Animal Control Division in July.

Delaney says, “During the assessment, they found the conditions were not up to par, and there were some internal issues that were going on.”

Reginald Sumner who is adopting a pet, he says, he believes the partnership is a great idea.  He says, “That’s an awesome opportunity for the dogs, for the cats, for the animals in general.”

Delaney says, the animals the Humane Society accepts will receive the best care and a higher chance of being adopted because the Humane Society places around 40 animals a-week.  She says, “We do have do have behavior enrichment programs here so that’s really important and it’s something that sets us apart from the other facilities in the area.  We’re looking forward to working with the animals that may have medical conditions and we have vets on staff to treat that.”

The Executive Director says she’s heard there are some concerns about the animals leaving the Gary community and she says the residents shouldn’t worry. Delaney says, “We really want to stress that we are there as a resource, for the animals and the people.  We are able to provide services, everything in terms of helping the needs of the community.”

It’s a new partnership for the city of Gary and the Munster shelter, and possibly a new beginning for needy cats and dogs.  The Humane Society is hosting and adoption event October 18th, 19th, 20th.  Its hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
