Northwest Indiana is reeling from the weekend snowfall, blowing and drifting snow and dangerously-low wind chills this morning.   Indiana state police and INDOT issued a state of emergency because of the weather and road conditions. Here’s the latest list from INDOT spokesman Matt Deitchley as of 6 a.m.:

–          I-80-94, both eastbound and westbound, closed between the Indiana-Illinois state line and the Indiana Toll Road.

–          I-94, both eastbound and westbound, between the Illinois state line and the U.S. 421 exit (Michigan City).

–          I-65, both northbound and southbound, between U.S. 12/20 (Gary) and mile marker 172 (Lafayette).   State Police report several jacknnifed semi-trucks and other stranded vehicles along the stretch of the interstate.

–          Several state highways to the south of the Region are also closed because of blowing and drifting snow that halted traffic.

Police, with assistance from the Indiana National Guard, are assisting stranded motorists. Motorists forced to abandon their vehicle will be transported to places of shelter.

ALL South Shore train service & planned busing is canceled because of hazardous weather conditions.   NICTD will monitor parking lot and platform conditions and restore service as soon as conditions warrant.

The Indiana Dept of Homeland Security issued a Travel Warning for all counties in northwest Indiana.  That means residents should stay off the roads… comply with necessary emergency measures… and cooperate with public officials and disaster services forces in executing emergency operations plans.  And, of course, obey police orders and directions.

Indiana University Northwest in Gary is closed today.  The Moraine Center on campus is open as a warming center for Gary residents.

Purdue University Calumet closed the campus today and will assess the situation in deciding if campus will open tomorrow (Tues).

Valparaiso University is closed until Tuesday.  Residence halls and the Harre Union will remain open with dining services as students return to campus.

Univ. of St Francis in Crown Point and the Calumet College of St Joseph in Whiting are both closed today.

All regional public school districts announced there would be no classes on Monday.  The Merrillville Community Schools and North Newton School Corp. extended the closings for Tuesday, as well.

Community Health Net centers are closed today —  all Franciscan Alliance satellite offices   and Methodist Hospitals cancelled all elective procedures and outpatient services.  There will also be no Meals on Wheels deliveries today.
