New Animal Shelter May Be Next To County Park
August 22, 20-13 — The Porter County Commissioners plans to ask the Porter County Parks Foundation to consider donating a few acres of land at Sunset Hill Farm County Park to build a new animal shelter.
The Parks Foundation holds the deed to a 15-acre parcel in the park’s northwest corner, at U-S 6 and Meridian.
Commissioner President John Evans says they’ve been looking at possible locations for a new shelter and talked to several groups and individuals. Evans says they agreed the best place to put it was in the middle of the county, where it would be easier for people to reach. The current animal shelter is on County Road 50-West, a mile south of Valparaiso near State Road 2.
The Commissioners may ask the Park Board next month to start talks with the Foundation about the land. A consultant last year recommended that a larger animal shelter be built, and a move to a new location would allow that to happen.
